Session Overview:
Thinking aloud: making metacognition explicit
Metacognition is one of the core evidence-informed 'best bets' to improve outcomes for pupils, including those with SEND. Metacognition can be difficult to 'see'. By using the think aloud strategy, we can make our the thought processes of an expert explicit to pupils.
Questioning to develop self-regulated learners
To develop pupils' independence in learning, we can guide and probe their thinking by asking powerful metacognitive questions to encourage pupils to reflect on their approaches to tasks. We can provide appropriate challenge and scaffold for pupils to promote their self-regulation.
